Bus Safety Standard

Project Scope

Transport for London (TfL) has adopted a Vision Zero approach to road safety in London and has a target that nobody will be killed in, or by, a London bus by 2030. As part of a wide-ranging approach to achieving this ambitious target, TfL first commissioned extensive collision data research to understand the problems and to identify potential vehicle safety countermeasure and then commissioned work to define a world leading bus safety standard to greatly enhance the safety performance of vehicles in their bus fleet. The safety features evaluated included Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), Automated Emergency Braking (AEB), enhanced direct and indirect vision, Blind Spot Warnings, Pedestrian and cyclist friendly front end design, and occupant friendly interiors.

OUR Role in the Project

Apollo was a subcontractor to project leaders TRL Limited. We provided support and advice across the full breadth of the project and led the evaluation of AEB and the development of associated technical requirements. The work involved analysis of CCTV data from bus operator incident records, collision data from IRIS and Stats 19, execution of a public road trial of a prototype vehicle, design, oversight and analysis of two separate sets of trials on a closed test track. We believe this to be the first time anyone in the world has trialled and developed requirements for pedestrian sensitive AEB on a city bus and the research contained unique challenges and two entirely novel false positive test procedures and performance ratings were developed.
